Seniors are an important part of the life of the Abrigo Centre. Whether it is helping them to receive a pension they are entitled to or joining a group to connect with other seniors and removing themselves from isolation, our agency provides dynamic programming that makes a difference for hundreds of seniors each year.
Abrigo’s Life and Hope Group began in 2010 with a small group of volunteers identifying the need in the community for a peer-to-peer support group. Our senior’s counsellor in collaboration with the volunteers have created a support program that reaches out to seniors’ living in isolation, offers companionship and support and has contributed to the wellbeing of hundreds of seniors through the years.
Prior to the pandemic, the Life and Hope group held their activities on Abrigo’s second floor every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The program is currently running online through Facebook and also connects with seniors over the phone and through friendly social distanced visits until the seniors can safely return to Abrigo in person. When they do, all health and safety protocols will be followed and all participants must be double vaccinated against COVID-19.
Once back at Abrigo, our 125 participants will return to activities such as exercise classes, computer classes, art classes, singing, dancing, health and financial information sessions, games such as bingo and field trips to local and regional attractions. Currently on pause since the start of the pandemic, our Seniors Assisting Seniors program is led by a dynamic group of volunteers, all seniors, who generously give their time back to the community to help their peers. These engaged and dynamic volunteers help our client’s complete retirement forms, pension supplement forms and other related forms such as applying for drug benefits, Canadian citizenship and Canadian passports.
The dedicated volunteers in our Seniors Assisting Seniors program also assist in clarifying issues related to seniors’ rights and obligations.
