Gender-based violence (GBV) or abuse can take many forms and can happen to anyone. Gender-based violence is unacceptable. There is no excuse, and the person experiencing harm is never to blame for the abuser’s behaviour.
Abrigo Centre offers confidential support services for women and their children who are experiencing intimate partner violence/abuse or other forms of abuse.
The incidence of violence against women and girls is estimated to be higher than reported statistics suggest, with many experiences going unreported. The COVID-19 pandemic further increased gender-based violence as people were isolated together. Abrigo has seen a 22 per cent increase in demand since March 2020. If you have experienced abuse, you can contact us. In a safe and confidential environment, we will listen, support you, and move at your pace as you explore your options.
With your safety and confidentiality in mind, our counsellors work with you to address both immediate concerns and longer-term goals. We provide emotional support, safety planning, and connections to community resources and services you may wish to access. Individual and group counselling are available in English and Portuguese to support your safety and wellbeing.
Abuse is behaviour used to intimidate, isolate, dominate, or control another person. It can involve physical, emotional, psychological, financial, or other forms of harm. Abuse can occur in intimate relationships, including married or common-law partnerships, same-sex relationships, and dating relationships.
Gender-based Violence can also occur in other contexts, including within families, workplaces, or communities.
It may involve a parent, child, extended family member, community leader, professional, acquaintance, or stranger.
