You are not alone.

Your Safety & Confidentiality is always our top priority.

Gender-based violence or abuse can come in many forms and it can happen to anyone. Violence against women (VAW) is unacceptable. There is no excuse, and the victim is never to be blamed for the abuser’s behavior.

Abrigo Centre’s priority crisis services are ready and available to women and their children who are experiencing intimate partner violence/abuse or other types of abuse.

The incidence of violent acts against women and girls is estimated to be higher than official reported statistics suggest. A large percentage of this violence goes unreported. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a further increase in gender-based violence cases as people isolate together. Abrigo has seen a 22 per cent increase since March 2020. If you have experienced abuse, call us and in a safe and confidential environment, we will listen to you, support you and go at your pace in exploring your options.

With your safety and confidentiality in mind, our counsellors will work with you in support of your immediate and long-term needs. Counsellors support with crisis intervention, offer emotional support and referrals to other services you may be interested in accessing. Individual and group counselling services are available in English and Portuguese and are here to support your safety and wellbeing.

Abuse is behavior used to intimidate, isolate, dominate or control another person. Abuse happens when someone hurts or mistreats you. Abuse can occur in intimate relationships such as a married couple, common-law couple, same sex relationship, boyfriend/girlfriend or dating relationship.

Abuse and violence against women can also occur in the workplace, by a parent or child, an extended family member, community leader, medical or other professional, someone you trust, someone you just met or a complete stranger.
