Abrigo Centre Community Donates 22 Backpacks to Native Child & Family Services

Abrigo Centre came together across our programs and community to donate 22 backpacks filled with school supplies and personal hygiene items to Native Child & Family Services of Toronto. Through our Seniors Program, support came through staff bake sales, agency patrons, and youth participating in programming at a local high school.

This initiative was also used as an opportunity for learning and reflection within the Seniors Program, exploring the history of colonization and learning about Indigenous cultures and experiences:

“We see this as the beginning of an ongoing relationship grounded in learning, respect, and mutual cultural exchange,” said Paula De Jesus, Abrigo’s Co-Executive Director, Programs & Services. “We look forward to creating opportunities in the future to welcome Indigenous Elders and community members into our Seniors program to share stories, culture, and a meal together.”

What makes this initiative especially meaningful is that it became much more than a donation. Together, we raised funds through our programs and staff efforts, gathered supplies, and created opportunities for learning and dialogue. Our seniors also participated in talks exploring the history and ongoing impacts of colonization and reflecting on the ways we can each contribute to reconciliation.
